Abstract

Key aspects are described that relate to distance education (EaD) or remote education, in transition towards a virtual one, which necessarily requires the use of current technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the challenges that this represents. A descriptive and explanatory methodology combined with a quantitative method is used in the application of an online survey to UNED professors, on the current challenges of the State Distance University (UNED) of Costa Rica, in relation to teaching with respect to AI. The objective is to relate the benefits of AI and EaD, which contemplates the specific challenges in the context of the university, for which a literature review of articles selected from digital databases was carried out, to compare reality in terms of education and especially, distance and virtual. Important findings were found regarding what the authors of the literature review and the key points at UNED that need to be focused in order to adapt to the new reality, such as the need for intelligent virtual tutoring, explore artificial intelligence for the delivery of teaching and monitoring of online activities, especially in the application of training activities. Finally, this is the beginning, future lines of research are based on how to apply AI to the challenges posed by distance education in transition to virtual.
